We have become addicted to feel-good speeches, memes, cat posters and quick fixes that more of us are sinking into depression daily. Or worse, we are getting addicted to drugs, alcohol or dangerous behaviours. When it comes to fixing oneself, there are no quick fixes! You have to do the work.
You cannot accumulate a lifetime of bad choices, behaviours and character to think that you can get rid of these by creating a few memes. Or a few months or right thinking and positive energy. You have to take responsibility for how far you have fallen from your ideal self and begin the work.
The task could involve months of religiously following a schedule if you want to create a better routine. It could also entail many more months of actively doing what you are supposed to do even when your whole being is opposed to this.
You have to stop being lazy with your life. Stop living only in the moment but actively create your ideal self and work towards achieving that. You could realize that you need to become a better and more involved friend. Get up and make that date and keep it!
A better version of yourself could be working out three times a week. Put that bread and butter down, and start running. Create a working meal plan. Maybe you want to quit drinking because it is hurting the relationships that you have. It will not be easy, but decide, and take baby steps towards this. Continually negotiate with your current self, for a better version of yourself tomorrow.
Life is about progress. If you notice you are stagnant, look at the areas that you are complacent. Look at the arrears that you are mediocre. Choose your actions daily to reflect progress and excellence. You cannot compromise on your future self if you do not want to sink into depression.
Avoiding negative people and having good thoughts about yourself can only go so far. You are a mess, and you need to realize this. You are bad for the relationships around you. It is not their fault things are falling apart. It is your complacency, and laziness that has led to this.
Choose a healthy version of yourself daily, and it will surprise you in a few months how far you will go. Yes, things will still happen around you, but they will not affect you as much. The road to a better version of yourself is long, arduous and unappealing, but the outcome will be satisfying!
